The IFMA Tulsa May 2014 meeting featured a tour of the new Aloft Hotel in downtown Tulsa. The building housing the hotel was once Tulsa's City Hall.
The good news is that the areas that were once old, outdated offices have become beautiful, stylish and contemporary hotel rooms and suites. The bad news is that the lobby and meeting areas have been virtually untouched. This was done on purpose to maintain the "historical" perspective of the building. However, a number of IFMA members noted that they would have no interest in bringing clients or scheduling meetings at a hotel that appears to be living in the 1950's and 60's complete with the dust and grime from an era gone by.
Time will tell how well the Aloft fares in downtown Tulsa. It's sister hotel in southeast Tulsa has a hip bar that attracts Tulsans in for a cocktail while also giving the appearance of a small, luxury boutique type hotel. The downtown location? Not so much.
IFMA members were treated to lunch at the nearby Baxter's Interurban Grill which has been a popular downtown staple for many years.
