The January 2014 meeting featured a tour of the OU Wayman Tisdale Specialty Clinic. The University of Oklahoma established the clinic to address significant health disparities in Tulsa and provide quality health care to citizens of north, east and west Tulsa.
It is fulfilling that goal in its' first year of operation. The clinic, named in honor of the late OU and NBA basketball star, Olympic gold medalist and jazz musician, was dedicated on December 13th at the site, located at 36th Street North and Hartford Avenue.
The Tisdale center was built in response to a study showing a considerably lower life expectancy and far fewer physicians in north Tulsa compared to south Tulsa. The initial goal was to provide vitally needed specialty care for the underserved area. Today, the clinic offers treatment to sixteen medical specialties.
Our tour guide was Thomas Boxley, Facility Manager. In addition to taking us on a tour of the facility, Thomas talked about some of the challenges they faced in their attempt to become LEED certified.
We had a great turnout for the meeting/tour with over 40 members and guests in attendance.
